County Intermediate Road Championships

History was made on Sunday at the County Intermediate Road Championships when for the first time the club brought home the silverware with a fantastic victory in what turned out to be a very competitive team championship. We were relying on just three athletes to make this happen and each of the trio put heart and soul into the effort. Over the first 1.5k’s of the race all three, Angela Fogarty, Louise Fogarty and Orla Healy, went with the pace and kept that composure going throughout the rest of the 4k race. Angela was our leading athlete finishing a brilliant second in a time of 15.34 just 9 seconds adrift of the winner. Crossing the line less than six seconds later was Louise who also had a fantastic run to take third place. The final placing was pivotal for the team and what an effort Orla put in to finish tenth in 16.40 having just arrived back from work placement in France during the week. 23 athletes and 7 club teams competed in the championship and with the club having a score of 15pts we waited in anticipation of the final result. It couldn’t have been closer with just one point between first and second and much to our delight the girls created that slice of history to be crowned County Intermediate Road Champions for 2019. A fantastic well done to all three athletes.
