Great news emerged from the AAI Masters Indoor Championships in Athlone today when Stephen Flanagan in his first National Indoor Competition captured the silver medal in the High Jump with a new personal best, only losing out on the gold medal on countback. Stephen had first time clearances at 1.40, 1.45, 1.50 and 1.55 and cleared 1.60 on his third attempt. Both Stephen and the winner failed at 1.63 and it was then that the countback came into play – the winner cleared 1.60 on his first attempt as against Stephen’s third and that secured the gold medal for him. What a great achievement for Stephen in his first national masters competition. Not content with competing in the high jump Stephen also competed in the 800mts and in what was an extremely fast event he finished and excellent 5th overall in a time of 2.15.67. Well done Stephen on a great championship.
