Over 200 people took part in the Moyne AC 5k Run/Walk on Sunday last in ideal weather conditions.  The event was run as a fundraiser for the club who are currently in the process of redeveloping their outdoor track which will be of huge benefit to the many local people who currently use the facility for running and walking and which is indeed also enjoyed by many others in the wider hinterland not to mention the juvenile and senior athletes of the club. 

The race itself turned into a two man race between Tony Reilly, Ballyroan/Abbeyleix AC and William Hughes, Thurles Crokes and indeed it was only in the final few metres that Tony got the nod.  His winning time was 16.01 compared to 16.02 for William.  Tony took the prize for first O/40 male with William taking the prize for first Senior Man.  Third place went to John Fitzgibbon, Thurles Crokes in 17.07 with Michael Ryan, Dundrum fourth in 17.20. Fifth place went to Pat Ryan, Dundrum in 17.43 and he won the O/45 prize.  In sixth place was John Treacy, Thurles Crokes in 17.45 followed by Paddy Cummins, Moycarkey Coolcroo in 17.57.  Eight place went to Peter Madden, Templemore in 18.16 while   Sean Percy finished ninth in 18.22. Making it into the top ten was Michael Carey, Coolquill in 18.27.  Michael Moore, Dundrum won the O/50 prize finishing eleventh overall in 18.37.

The first lady home and making it a Ballyroan/Abbeyleix double was Grace McConnell who finished fourteenth overall in a time of 18.58 to claim the senior ladies prize.  She was followed home by Carmel Fitzgibbon, Thurles Crokes in 19.17 with Eileen McCullagh, Thurles Crokes third lady home in 19.30.  Linda Grogan, Cashel finished fourth lady in 19.34 followed by Brigid Gleeson, Moyne in fifth in 22.00 to win the O/40 prize.  Next home was Susan Fogarty, Johnstown in 22.05 followed by Lorraine Healy, Moyne in 22.07 with Laura Carey, Coolquill hot on their heels in 22.09. Ninth lady home was Sinead Butler, Moyne in 22.21 with the final place in the top ten going to Brid Quinlan of Thurles in 22.23.  Frances Long, Moyne won the O/45 prize finishing the course in 23.03 while Liz Power, Moyne won the O/50 prize in a time of 26.02.
