Five club teams participated in the County Road Relay Championships promoted by Dundrum AC in Clonoulty GAA Grounds on Sunday and four of the teams arrived home with championship medals. The relays are based on the format of 800mts x 1,500mts x 800mts x 3,000mts with junior and senior athletes combining in this unique championship.
The ladies got proceedings underway with three teams representing the club in Division 1. Not an easy task as the girls were in amongst the strongest clubs in the County but as the saying goes “its’ all on the day” and what a performance the quartet of Orla Healy (800), Kate Harrison (1,500), Sarah Healy (800) and Angela Fogarty (3,000) gave to clinch victory over a quality Dundrum team. Great runs from all four laid the foundation for this victory. As the club had entered more than one team our other two teams were placed in the B section of Division 1 and again all eight ladies showed their potential at the various distances with Emma Doyle (800), Brigid Gleeson (1,500), Ber Spillane (800) and Susan Fogarty (3,000) emerging as Division 1B champions while Aisling Maher (800), Liz Power (1,500), Sinead McLoughlin (800) and Sharon Cantwell (3,000) ran on very strongly to take the silver medals.
Two quality men’s teams lined out for the club in the men’s competition. The club were competing with teams from Division 2 and in a particularly strong division they finally got amongst the medals with a terrific performance from the team of Eamonn Troy (800), Stephen Flanagan (1,500), Jack Moore (800) and Liam Kelly (3,000) to clinch the silver medals despite the best efforts of the opposition. Hard luck on the second team of Paddy Doyle (800), Brian Carroll (1,500), Patrick Bowe (800) and Richard Daly (3,000) who just missed out on the bronze medals finishing fourth overall.
The next event for the majority of these athletes is the County Novice Road Championships being hosted by the club on Sunday 14th February. Athletes aged 19 or who reach 19 in 2016 can compete and we would encourage all eligible athletes to turn out for the club. With such a strong showing of athletes on Sunday the club could well again feature in the medals on the day. A reminder to all athletes that they must be registered for 2016 to compete as the on-line entry system will not allow non-registered athletes to enter.
