Tipperary Junior, Senior and Master’s Track and Field Championship, Templemore
The Tipperary Track and Field Championships took place in Templemore last weekend. The bright sunny afternoon provided a great opportunity for many of our athletes to attain PBs as well as having ten county champions along with the Junior and Master Ladies relays claiming gold in the 4x100m event.
The day started on a promising note where we saw Susan Fogarty compete in the High Jump where she claimed the bronze medal. Susan had a very busy day out, also competed in the 1,500m (placing 5th), shot (placing 2nd) javelin (placing 2nd, throwing 16.96) and the senior relay. In the junior Long Jump we saw Katie Bergin claim silver and in the senior Long Jump we had Aisling Maher and Sharon Cantwell going head to head. This competition went down to the wire and the difference between Gold and Silver came down to 1cm. In the final round Aisling and Sharon both jumped their best jump of the competition (4m) however, Aisling claimed gold on count-back. In the Shot, we saw Naomi continue her golden form with a throw of 6.76cm to claim gold in the O 40’s Shot Putt.
On the track, Moyne AC had big numbers running in the sprinting events. Much of the competitors compete in the Moyne League Track and Field and have season bests set prior to this event. The determination of our women was palpable and clearly evident on the final medal table.
The 100m saw Kate Harrison, Ber Spillane, Edel Delaney and Liz Power toe the line for the ladies Master’s event, with Sarah Healy and Aisling Maher competing in the women’s senior event and Kate Bergin and Aisling Dwyer competing in the junior competition.
In the 200m, Kate Bergin and Aisling Dwyer were 2nd and 3rd in the Junior Ladies, Aisling Maher, Sharon Cantwell and Susan Fogarty were 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively and in the Master’s competition Kate Harrison, Ber Spillane, Edel Delaney and Liz Power competed. Ray Power competed in the Men’s O55 competition, winning his category.
It was gold and silver in the 400m Ladies in all three categories, including a bronze in the Master’s category. Aisling Dwyer and Shannon Boland competed in the junior category, Sarah Healy and Aisling Maher claimed gold and silver in the senior competition and Kate Harrison, Ber Spillane and Edel Delaney claimed the top three positions in the Master event.
In the longer distances we saw Orla Healy take the senior 3,000m title with Angela Fogarty taking the master’s 3,000m title. The ladies worked with one another for the first half of the race to set themselves up to run season’s bests. Angela also competed in the 800m just minutes before her 3,000m where she placed 2nd in her category. Bridget Gleeson also ran excellently in the 800mts to take 1 second off her PB to finish 1st in her category.
In the equivalent race for the men, Moyne had three participants, with Dylan Mc Loughlin finishing 3rd in the junior category, followed home by Nathan Bowe (who had just won the junior 400m competition) finishing 4th. Ray Power finished in 1st position in his category.
In the men’s 5k the field spread considerably and Liam Kelly ran excellently to finish in 3rd place with Patrick Bowe finishing first in the O45 competition. In the women’s 1,500m we had three competitors, Lorraine Healy, Sharon Cantwell and Susan Fogarty. All three girls ran season best performances finishing in 3rd, 4th and 5th respectively.
The relay saw gold for the junior and senior ladies and a silver and gold for the Master Ladies. Congratulations to all athletes involved on a terrific County Championship.
Inter-Club Track & Field Challenge
Thanks to all our athletes and parents for their fantastic support on Tuesday night for the annual inter-club track and field challenge against Moycarkey-Coolcroo, Coolquill and Moyglass. 91 young athletes from the parish and beyond took part for the club with the result that we were winners of the best overall club on the night. Competition was very tight on the night with some great running, throwing and jumping from athletes from all four clubs. Our thanks to everyone who helped out on the night, the many parents and supporters in attendance from all clubs, the parents for providing the refreshments and to the catering staff on the night for all their work in feeding the big attendance. Louise Hickey accepted the cup on behalf of the club and medals were distributed to the younger members of the club on the night. More medals have been ordered and we hope to have them available in the next week.
