National Masters Track & Field Championships
Following a long season of activity, the final races of the season for Bernadette Spillane took place on Saturday last in Tullamore at the National Masters Track & Field Championships. Competing in the W40 category Bernadette ran a great 400mts to finish third and claim a national bronze medal with a time of 1.08.33. Also competing in the 200mts she finished in fourth place in what was an incredibly competitive event clocking a time of 30.15. Well done and congratulations Bernadette.
National Track & field League
Congratulations to the Tipperary Ladies team as they finished in the silver medal position in the final of the National Track & Field League held in Tullamore on Sunday last. This result shows the dept in talent in the County and our own club provided a number of members to the team. Sharon Cantwell in only her second race over the 3,000mts steeplechase, gained the maximum number of points for the County with a great victory in 11.59.31. Katie Bergin ran in both the 100mts and 200mts finishing second in the 200mts in 25.02 and third in the 100mts in 12.64 while also being part of the 4 x 100mts relay team that finished fifth. Team members were drawn from all across the County and congratulations must go to team manager, Martin Flynn and selectors Geraldine Hickey and John Flynn for all their efforts in bringing them all together and their performances over the entire league.
Cross Country Training
The club has resumed training for the cross-country season. All juveniles’ athletes from 10 years of age and older and adults interested in taking part in cross country are welcome to attend. Training on Tuesday and Friday nights at 7.30pm.
Coaching Courses
Sport Ireland Coaching in partnership with the LSP Network and the Sport Ireland Participation Unit are hosting a series of ICOACHKIDS Regional Coaching Conferences for coaches of children and teenagers. The aim of the conferences is to bring good coaching knowledge and practice to these important coaches and signpost where they can access more information. Local Athletics Ireland Regional Development Officer, Colin Byrne, has organised a number of coaching courses in Templemore in September – Athletics Leader – Sep 17th 10am-5pm – this course focuses on introducing the fundamentals of athletic movement to children. Cost- €70 per coach. Assistant Coach – Sep 24th – 10am-5pm. This course focuses on coaching in 3 key event areas, running (Sprints and Endurance), Jumping (Long Jump), Throwing (Shot Putt) plus warm up. Cost- €70. Split the Bucket!
