Munster U/9-U/11 Individual & Team Games and U/12-U/13 Track & Field Championships
The club were well represented at the above Munster Track & Field Championships and all the athletes must be commended on their performances. In particular, special mention must go to Lily Murphy and Meadhb Hall who came away from the event with Munster medals, no mean achievement considering the huge fields taking part in all of the competitions. Lily finished second in the Girls U/9 60mts in a time of 10.09 while Meadhb finished second in the U/9 Long Jump with a leap of 3.19mts. To show how competitive this event was, Lily had to compete against 52 athletes in the 60mts and Maeve 35 athletes in the Long Jump. Congratulations to both young athletes on their brilliant performances.
Another athletes to impress was Gerard Delaney who having finished fourth in the Boys U/12 Turbo Javelin with a throw of 23.64mts has qualified for the National Juvenile Track & Field Finals to be held later in the summer in Tullamore. Well done Gerard on a great achievement.
Also competing alongside Lily in the 60mts were Maeve, Orlaith Costigan and Annie Ely and each of the three did exceptionally well. Maeve finished third in her heat in 10.76, Orlaith fifth in her heat in 10.96 and Annie third in her heat in 11.16. All four also competed in the Long Jump and as previously stated Meadhb finished second in 3.19mts, Lily fifth in 3.04mts, Annie twelfth in 2.71mts and Orlaith twentieth in 2.50mts. At U/10 level we had two girls in action in Anna Concagh and Doireann Quinlan. Anna finished sixth in her heat of the 60mts in 11.66 while Doireann finished fourth in her heat in 11.11 and again well over 50 athletes took part in this event. In the Long Jump Doireann finished forty fifth with a leap of 2.50mts while Anna finished fifty fifth with a jump of 2.35mts. Also at U/10 level we had seven boys taking part. In the 60mts Daniel Delaney stormed to victory in his heat in 9.96 secs but such was the competitive nature of the event with nine heats in total he was unlucky to miss out on a podium finish. Matthew Esmonde, Zach Ryan, and Leo Cullen all finished seventh in their respective heats timed at 10.92, 11.09 and 11.35 respectively. All four boys also competed in the Long Jump where Zach came thirteenth (3.19mts), Daniel twenty fifth (2.92), Leo thirty sixth (2.74mts) and Matthew forty fourth (2.50mts). They were also joined by Darragh Maher who finished twenty-eight (2.87mts), Senan Phelan forty second (2.59) and Fionn Phelan forty seventh (2.39). Senan and Fionn also took part in the 500mts finishing thirty-eight (1.48.45) and forty fifth (1.51.62) respectively.
Faye Murphy was our only athlete in the U/11 category and what a race she produced in the 60mts finishing third in her heat in 9.66mts but again the standard was red hot as a further seven heats were needed to produce the winner. Unfortunately for Faye she missed out on a medal on this occasion. She later returned to the track to take part in the Long Jump where she finished twenty sixth with a leap of 2.98mts. As mentioned above Gerard Delaney competed in the U/12 category and having finished fourth in the Turbo Javelin he finished tenth in the Long Jump (3.51mts) and 11th in the High Jump having lost out at the 1.15mts height. Also competing U/12 was Ella McGinley who took part in the Turbo Javelin and with a throw of 10.62mts finished in fourteenth place overall. Our final individual athlete was Maria Doyle who competed in the Girls U/13 Javelin and finished ninth overall with a throw of 12.44mts.
The relays always provide great excitement, and these Championships continued this trend with some great running and very competitive club teams taking part. The Girls U/9 team (Meadhb Hall, Annie Ely, Orlaith Costigan, Lily Murphy) can count themselves unlucky as having finished a very impressive third in their heat (1.12.15) they missed out on a medal by a couple of hundreds of a second. Indeed the first and second teams in their heat finished first and second overall. The Girls U/10 team of Doireann Quinlan, Meadhb Hall, Anna Concagh and Lily Murphy finished seventh in their heat in 1.11.77 while the Boys U/10 were sixth in their heat in 1.12.80 represented by Matthew Esmonde, Daniel Delaney, Zach Ryan and Fionn Phelan. The final athletes into action were the Girls U/13 team of Ciara Joyce, Caoimhe Slevin, Niamh Gleeson, Heidi Maher, and Olive Spillane and in what was a straight final, they came through for sixth with a time of 59.79.
Huge congratulations to all the athletes involved. There is a huge step up in competition at Munster level and each and every one of them were so competitive. Thanks to all the parents who travelled the two days and to the coaches and officials who also supported them on the two days of competition.
