County Novice Ladies & Men
County Novice Cross Country Championships
We had 6 ladies running in the Novice Cross Country Championships, in a hilly Newport. It proved to be a fantastic start to the season with individual gold, bronze and 2 team medals won.
Louise Fogarty was among the frontrunners from the start and as the 4k race unfolded Louise and Dundrum athlete Karen Coughlan ran side by side for the majority of the race. In the last kilometre, Louise began to put a few metres between them and lengthened this lead as she headed into the last 400m to take the title. Orla Healy ran a great steady race to finish 3rd. Aisling Maher had a final burst of speed that saw her sprint to the finish line in 8th position. Edel Delaney was just behind her in 9th place. The next athlete in for Moyne was Sharon Cantwell (11th) and making her novice debut was Michelle Percy who finished in 16th position. Louise, Orla and Aisling received a team silver medal with Edel, Sharon and Michelle getting the bronze.
The men’s race was the final run of the afternoon. We had 3 representatives in this 6k race – Liam Kelly, Stephen Flanagan and Paddy Doyle. They took to the hilly course with determination. Liam was first home for Moyne in 7th position followed closely by Stephen in 8th place. Paddy was making his return to cross country after injury and had a steady run to finish 33rd.
Well done to each athlete who represented the club proudly. A great day, in particular, for the ladies’ team – congratulations!
