County Even Age Juvenile & Novice Cross Country Championships

The club travelled to Galbally on Sunday for the first day of the new cross country championship year. Seasoned and non-seasoned athletes toed the line to represent the green and gold with pride and all acquitted themselves extremely well with particular emphasis on Alana Spillane (silver U/16), Aaron Moore (bronze U/18) and Lisa Quinlan (silver Novice Ladies).

Five athletes donned the club singlet for the Girls U/10 race with Annie Ely leading them home in 23rd closely followed by Doireann Quinlan in 27th. Anna Concagh finished 36th with Meadhbh Hall in 37th and Eva Maher 44th. The girls finished 7th in the club competition. Nine athletes ran for the club in the Boys U/10 race with Darragh Maher the first home in 13th place. Senan Phelan, Matthew Esmonde, Tom Renehan and Geoffrey Morrissey followed each other home in 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st respectively. Fionn Phelan finished 29th with Cian Kelly 32nd, Patrick Bradshaw 37th and Daniel Delaney 40th. The club had two teams finishing, placing 5th and 6th club.

In the Girls U/12 race Caoimhe Slevin was our first finisher in 22nd place followed by Muireann Casey in 24th, Cassidy Bradshaw 25th, Amy Hackett 36th and Abbie Manton 37th which brought the club to 6th place in the team competition. In the Boys equivalent Cathal O’Reilly finished 19th with Gerard Delaney 29th and William Morrissey 32nd.

Aisling O’Reilly was our lone representative in the Girls U/14 race finishing 5th overall while Alana Spillane was also the only club person in her race at U/16 level but did not let that deter her as she produced a great performance to finish 2nd and claim a County silver medal. Adam Phelan also ran solo for the club when in his event, Boys U/16, he fought hard to claim 6th.

Our final two athletes in the juvenile events were Aaron Moore and Michael O’Mahoney who took part in the U/18 Boys race. Covering 6k they both did exceptionally well with Aaron driving forward throughout the race to finish 3rd and win a county bronze medal while Michael picked off the athletes throughout the race to finish in 4th.

With injuries taking their toll on our senior athletes we were left with just two members Lisa Quinlan and Pakie Bowe competing in the Novice Championships. In the ladies’ event, over 4k, fifteen athletes faced the starter with Lisa making her presence known as she led out the field from the whistle. With four laps of the course to complete, Lisa forged ahead for the first two laps but was gradually drawn in by Suzanne Shine, Clonmel who took up the mantle of leader for the final two laps. Credit to Lisa, she never gave up and came home very strongly for second place and a county silver medal in a time of 17.46. Pakie was amongst a field of 43 athletes in the men’s event and ran very solidly for the entire 6k to finish in 25th place with a time of 25.51. Well done Lisa and Pakie.

Well done to all our 27 juvenile and 2 novice athletes on your performances on Sunday and all can now look forward with optimism to next week’s competition, the County Un-Even Age and Intermediate Championships in the Middlepiece, Two-Mile-Borris.
