Moyne AC Club Notes Weekend 21/05/2023

As the track and field and road racing seasons come to the fore, our athletes have been applying themselves with great distinction. Both our juvenile’s up to masters have been busy getting in those all important competition, with significant improvement seen already this early in the summer. We had our 3 middle distance youngsters of Aisling O’ Reilly and twins, Emma and Kate Delaney and Sarah McGinley travel to the Kingdom for the Munster schools T&F. Pakie Bowe was in Phonenix at the National 5k and closer to home Loughmore road races with Louise Fogarty and Cora Doyle. By contrast, Katie Bergin, Ber Spillane and Sharon Cantwell were on track in Templemore on Sunday at the Athletics Ireland, May Open Meet.

Munster Post Primary Schools Track and Field Championships – Castleisland

Sarah, Aisling, Kate and Emma represented their schools at the Munster Schools championships on Saturday last. Emma and Kate compete for the Presentation Thurles, while Sarah and Aisling represent the Ursuline Thurles.

Emma raced the Junior girls 800m and finished 6th overall with a PB to boot! Her time was 2.34.95. Aisling and Kate contested the Junior girls 1500m Finishing 6th and 8th respectively. Aisling clocking 5.20 and Kate 5.40. super running by them.  There was a wonderful result in the Junior girls shotputt competition. Sarah threw exceptionally well with a throw of 8.73 in the third round it secured a Munster bronze and All Ireland qualification! Well done Sarah!

Road Racing – Irish Runner National 5k Championships & Loughmore 8.5k road run

Patrick Bowe was out over the weekend racing back to back which commenced on Saturday morning in the Phoenix Park at the Irish Runner 5k series. He’s been running well at present and clocked 19.15 on the day finishing 14th in his age category and 187th overall at this very competitive race series. If that wasn’t enough he decided to run the local Loughmore John Kelly Memorial 8.5k road race in the village on Sunday morning and finished 9th overall in a time of 30.03.  He was joined by club mates Cora Doyle ( great to see Cora out running again) who ran well to finish in a good time of 37.36 (34th place). Louise continues her fine form and was the winner of the ladies race on the day with a fantastic time of 28.49 and 5th overall. Congrats to Louise!

Athletics Ireland – May Open Track and Field Meet – Templemore AC

Another initiative by Athletics Ireland was the facilitating of an open meet in Templemore. It was wonderful to have an event like this take place down the Country, although it was a relatively small event, there was quality competition (especially in sprinting) and those in attendance complimented the organisation of the meet. Sharon Cantwell came third in the 1500m in a time of 5.01.85. Bernadette Spillane competed in the 200m and 400m clocking 30.13 and 67.67 respectively. Well done to her! Final Athlete in action was Katie Bergin who had x2 spins over the 100m distance where she ran so well, running 12.07 in her first race over 100m (just less than 200ths inside of her PB). She lowered this time on the second round with a very fast 12.03 which would have been a PB but unfortunately the wind gauge declared an illegal wind. Alas this bodes well as we progress towards championships. Katie also raced the 200m and again clocked a fabulous time of 24.6. Well done girls.
