The 8th annual Centenary Thurles golden mile handicap was run at Moyne Athletic Club Track (by kind permission) on Saturday 17th August in aid of Motor Neuron Disease. In the mile handicap there was a field of 10 in this very competitive sporting event. Each year the handicap task is getting more difficult as this year there was only 2mins 25secs between first and last off.
The winner of the John Flynn cup 2013 was Howard Stanley 6.52 (Feed and Grain) just holding off Padraig Crone (Thurles Topline) in 2nd who had a fantastic run in 5.20 to break the record set by John Hogan in 2010,Tom Ryan Thurles (Mealstore) was 3rd in a pb of 5.42, 4th was David Brennan (Cashel) 5.58, 5th Tom Power (Stockproof) 6.15, 6th Ian Stanley (Maintaince) 6.39, 7th Ross Kerrigan (Maintaince) 6.52, 8th James Byrnes (Roscrea) 6.48, 9th Ultan Nesbitt (Roscrea) 8.22, 10th Johnny Ryan (Feed and Grain) 8.17.
Also held on that evening was an exciting inter branch relay with 5 teams taking part. Winners were Thurles team of Paudraig Crone, David Brennan and Tom Ryan.
In the golf section the winning team was Glen Kerrigan, Denis Kennedy, Tom Ryan on a score of 28pts. The above events made for a very enjoyable evening followed by a BBQ in Quinlans pub Moyne delicious food and presentation of prizes by CEO Joe Kerrigan all proceeds going to Motor Neuron Disease.
