What is considered the blue riband of cross country running, the County Senior Championships – took place on Sunday in Two-Mile-Borris and while our numbers competing were confined to just one lady and one man, their performances over the classic distances of 6k and 10k respectively were a joy to behold.
With Dympna Ryan, Dundrum, a worthy County Champion, clear of the field from the start, it was left to the rest of the field to fight it out for the minor placings, and this included our own Louise Fogarty. On what was a dry and solid course and run in what for October was an untypical hot summers day, Louise gradually showed her talent as she kept pace with the field and with over a lap and a half to go took up the mantle and pushed into second place, a position she was to hold right to the finish. What a great return – a County Senior Silver Medal – not since 2017 has the club featured in the individual medals and this was from Louise’s cousin, Angela who finished 3rd that year. Louise was timed at 24.58 for the 6k. Congratulations Louise
Jody Sweeney donned the green and gold singlet for the Club again this week and what a race he had in his first ever County Senior Championship. Finishing in the top half of a quality field of runners with many seasoned cross-country athletes in his wake he crossed the line in 15th place overall while averaging just under 4mins per kilometre when finishing the 10k race in 37.50. Well done Jody.
