At the foot of the great Galtee mountains lay todays xc course which was hosted by our friends of Mooreabbey Milers in Galbally Co. Limerick. Conditions were superb with the sun shining and what a lovely course was mapped out for our gallant athletes. The band of athletes were eager for another good performances to back up last week’s credentials at the novice.
As per custom, the ladies were first off at 2pm to take on a fast flat 5k course. The pace was set early on with a group of athletes pushing each other to the limiter, two of those were Moyne’s Louise Fogarty (first race back this season) and like last weekend Lisa Quinlan stuck with the hot pace for a long time! Credit to both girls for digging in very deep to finish 5th and 6th respectively. Next, we had Sinead Tynan who backed up a very fine run at the novice last week and showed her strength and determination in finishing in 8th position and was 3rd home for the club. These three girls combined to come away with the silver team medals on the day with a score of 19 points.
Sharon Cantwell came home in 10th place, clearly evident that she wasn’t firing on all cylinders today and possibly still feeling the effects from last weekend’s victory, nevertheless, gave what she could for her club and will be back to fight another day! Aisling Maher followed Sharon home in 12th another consistent run by Aisling and Kate Harrison in 19th place to wrap up the Moyne brigade! Ber Spillane also togged out for the green and gold today but unfortunately wasn’t herself early on and made the sensible decision to retire. There is better days ahead!
Next heading to post for the men’s race was Jody Sweeney our lone warrior, but that didn’t deter him from the task in hand and once again he displayed fierce determination and worked ever so hard all the way through the 8k race to finish 13th in a quality field. Jody has come to the fore this season for the club and we wish him more success and know his day in the sun will come!
Well done to all who ran today and many thanks to Mooreabbey for hosting, volunteers and supporters who made it a very enjoyable day!
Next week, part III, where the Turnpike is the venue for the County Seniors. All entries should be given to Ger Hickey ASAP.
